817,
With reference to your despatch No. 11 of March
51st and my despatch No. 17 of April 17th, I have the
honour to report further on the subject of limestone,
shipments of which I am glad to state have now been resumed
to the satisfaction of Messrs. Shewan Tomes & Company, the
local agents of the Green Island Gement Company.
The following is a brief statement of what has
taken place since the date of my last despatch.
matter
On May 15th, matters then being practically in
statu quo, I had an interview with Lung Tutu in the course
of which I expressed my extreme dissatisfmtion with the
attitude of the Provincial Government in regard to limestone
and strongly protested against official participation of
any kind in the industry. He replied that the
was one outside the sphere of his particular duties but
he promised he would endeavour to induce the Civil
Administrator (then Li X'ai Haien) to sever all connection
with the limestone business and the quarries at Tingtak.
